If you were thinking about taking my January 6-7 portrait drawing workshop then taking a look at my supply list would be a helpful way to start. As you can see many of the materials are easy to come by and may be found in your own studio. I love teaching charcoal for the raw hands on quality of the material and no nonsense structure of the lines. The material list is available here.
