3 years ago - By Awake and Painting

Oil on linen mounted on board 10"x10"
It's been a while since I last posted. I was away for a bit, then painted something that didn't cut the mustard.
This painting of a large shell in front of a still life took me a month. Is that too long? Not long enough? Who knows, certainly not me!
The green cloth is painted a bright phalo green, much brighter than this photo shows. Kind of like this:
A couple days before the end my studio skylight inexpicably shattered, raining tiny shards of glass all over my set up. I had to finish from memory.

    Art Consultant

3 years ago - By Jeanne Williamson

I dropped eight paintings, Seasonal Fences Winter , Spring , Summer , and Autumn 4 (above) and Seasonal Fences Winter , Spring , Summer , and Autumn 5 (below) off art an Art Consulting Company in Boston this morning.
They are joining Seasonal Fences Winter 2 and Spring 2 which were already in their collection of artwork that is available to decorators.
Seasonal Fences - Summer 2 and Autumn 2 found a new home in a high end residential tower in the Boston area a year ago, thanks to this same Art Consultant. I am very thankful for their role in this transaction.
    The Seasonal Fences series...

Tommi Lindh, director of the Alvar Aalto Foundation , shares four exciting reasons to enjoy the architectural offerings of Finland this summer. Architecture hasn't been this intensively represented in the Finnish summer events ever. The whole summer is full of nice places to visit, but what makes August so very special is what's happening in Helsinki and Jyväskylä in the beginning of the month. The Alvar Aalto Symposium kicks off with lectures by the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki on Wednesday, August 5 and continues...

  • Handy Containers For Damaged Paint Tubes

Handy Containers For Damaged Paint Tubes

3 years ago - By Reynolds Renditions

It occurred to me that artists might be interested in how to save and store damaged paint tubes and the above picture shows you my solution. It would help to remove the spice labels and add a label with the color of the paint inside. It also might help to keep them free of cat fur ! I didn't realize the fur was on the outside of the containers until I took the above photo.
This is a good idea when the lid won't fit on the paint tube anymore, or the side of the tube is slit or has a hole in it. I have had oil paint last for years this way. For those readers who are not artists, these spice...

  • Photographing the Extremes: 30 of the Best Silhouettes on 500px

    3 years ago - By 500px

Ah the silhouette... the antithesis of HDR photography. It may be considered a cop out or an "easy" trick, but there's something great about a photographer surrendering to the limitations of an extreme lighting situation or, better yet, creating one themselves.
A great silhouette shouldn't make you want to see more details. It has captured exactly what it should have, and more shadow details would only take away from this real-world scene that resides far beyond the extremes of what a camera can capture.
The 30 photos below are all great examples of silhouettes at their best. Not all are...

You Sure You Want to Be a Wedding Photographer?

3 years ago - By Peta Pixel

If you want to be a wedding photographer, you need to stop and think about your life.
So you want to be a wedding photographer? Want to go pro, go full-time, ditch that desk and take the industry by storm? Stop and think about your life. Do you LOVE to work? Like, truly LOVE working? Not the recognition, not the money and the fame, and least of all the internal accomplishment feedback that comes from achieving small successes that only you can see. Nope, you pretty much need to love doing the work .

    Ellie - 12 x 16 inches - WORK IN PROGRESS
We had word last Friday that we are AT LAST coming to the end of the process of selling our big house, and next week we hopefully will be able to get on with our renovation at the little old farmhouse we will be moving into. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!
Meanwhile, I'm sitting myself down at the easel this morning to work toward completion of this commission, which is also exciting and a joy to work on. As you can see, I started with a fairly detailed sketch with a soft 2B graphite drawing pencil. This is less the method of the...

  • Your Gas Station Paintings

    Your Gas Station Paintings

3 years ago - By Gurney Journey

We had a tremendous response to the Gas Station Challenge . I put out a call a few weeks ago for you to paint a gas station on location in black and white gouache. One of the reasons I suggested that subject was because I figured no one would have any such painting already completed.
Thanks to everyone who took part. You braved biting flies, extreme heat, rain, and station owners who were suspicious or who thought you were crazy. Some of you painted outdoors for the first time, or painted in gouache for the first time. And there were some old pros stepping up to the plate.
    It was really...

  • Four Paintings

    Four Paintings

3 years ago - By Fay Terry

Recent SaleI have met many wonderful people because of making art and selling my paintings. These four paintings sold recently to a lovely new friend who had been carrying one of my business cards in her wallet for a long time.I am so thrilled that she contacted me when she began redecorating her home.Three of the paintings reflect her love of North Carolina; the Dogwood flowers, the pine cone, and the Cardinal are symbols of "the Old North State".I framed these in some nice wide frames which she chose that really show them off beautifully.
    Thank You, Karen!

  • Well Said: A Good Prayer for Many Sad Hearts

3 years ago - By Happy Catholic

When my friends are in sorrow and trouble, or even when they are just without spirit, I like to pray, "Jesus, they have no wine," or "Mary, they have no wine." It is a good prayer for many sad hearts today.
Dorothy Day, On Pilgrimage I'm rereading this book which is Dorothy Day's daily diary from 1948. Into it she pours all the daily activities, which are quite varied considering she begins the year spending 2-1/2 months with her daughter in the country waiting for a new grandchild to be born and then returns to the city for her retreats and charity work.
    Interspersed with all this are...
